We Interrupt this Blog . . . A Fundraiser

I’m not saying that our culture suffers from attention deficit disorder, but . . . remember Katrina? There’s a fundraiser for Katrina in Baltimore on Nov. 1, at a club called Sonar. Doors open at 6 p.m. and all ages are welcome.

Tickets cost $50. Pricey, I know. But EVERY PENNY goes to Katrina relief. And if you buy a beverage, every penny or profit goes to the relief fund as well. Plus, Wendell “the Bunk” Pierce and other Wire types will be there. Check out www.sonar.com for more details.

So what do you get for your fifty dollars? Only three of the most wonderful bands ever — the Subdudes, Rebirth and the Iguanas. (I love the Iguanas so much I referenced them in The Last Place. Remember? They played the Cinco de Mayo event at the Point.)

Ticket sales aren’t what the organizers hoped. Maybe a lot of people are going to wait until the last minute. Maybe the Tuesday after the Halloween weekend is a tough date. But if you live in the area and can come — please do. I’ll be there. You can make fun of my dancing.

But not to my face.

(Hmmm. Dancing. Dances. A future topic? I believe the first dance I learned was — oh, the shame — “the Jerk.” Also, I have a photograph of two college friends doing the “Funky Tut.”)

  1. Oh what a great idea for someone to think of doing. If people all over the world would do some little thing such as this it could bring the dollars needed without people feeling too much of a drain on their own finances.

I wasn’t concious in the 70s as I’d had a stroke and brain surgery and I assume these are bands from the 70s because I’ve never heard of them. The very first dance I learned was called the Bop, that was in the 50s. Little Richard was becoming popular then and he even played at a pool party our school had at Marsh Creek, California, (a popular swimming hole out in the country with a big dance floor) when I was in my senior year. He was only slightly less outrageous then and really talented and fun. The rock scene was in it’s infancy and no one could have predicted how that was shaping up at that time, he was quite a novelty.
Then came Chubby Checker and the twist and other dances in the 60s. The changes after that are nothing short of phenomenal.

Thanks for the dance down memory lane Laura. :-)

  2. Who knew! When I met Phillip 4 years ago, the one thing we immediately had in common was our love of music. He told me one of his favorite groups was the Subdudes and I said the group I really liked was the Iguanas! Since 99.9% of the free world haven’t heard of these groups I thought that was remarkable! (especially since we’re both in our 50′s)
If we could get there we certainly would go. We even talked about it, but Wilmington North Carolina is a plane ticket or a 7 hour drive and it’s just not do-able. Hats off to whoever put this together and I hope “balmer” comes through with a good showing.

  3. Wish I lived closer I love the Subdudes. Don’t know the other two but I’ll have to check them out. Hope you are right about folks waiting till the last minute. Sounds like agreat evening.

  4. Ditto what Mary says. Wish I could go too. Sounds super …

Curious thing … the only time I’ve seen the Subdudes perform live was in New Orleans maybe ten years ago. They were the opening act for Linda Rondstadt and Aaron (‘voice of an angel’) Neville. Would love to see them again.

  5. It does sound like a fantastic evening. I think this should go on the road…mmmm…to Michigan, yeah, Michigan. I’d spend that much or more to hang with all the Baltimore/Wire/HLOTS types, especially with alcohol involved.

  6. Laura,

I think we are all suffering from disaster fatigue.

My calendar notes that my furnace filter needs changing that day .. but I believe I can fit Sonar in :-) See you there but don’t expect a dance out of me. I began with the Twist.
