WHAT THE DEAD KNOW slides off the printed New York Times list as of April 15th, down to #24. Bear in mind, two weeks ago I couldn’t imagine being #24, so my mellow continues unharshed.
Meanwhile – boy I’m glad I learned how to link. Here’s a good <a href=”http://www.nytimes.com/2007/04/05/books/05masl.html?ref=books” target=”_blank”>one</a>.
WARNING: At least one reader has found this link mildly spoiler-ish, and I see her point.
“warmer-blooded American Ruth Rendell”
Superb!
Wow. A Rendell comparison. Wow again! Fantastic review all around. Next week you’ll be back up on the top 10, I predict.

excellent review
For those of you who don’t live in the Baltimore area and might want to see the profile from today on Laura, go to baltimoresun.com. On the left, scroll down to ARTS/LIFE and down to click on Today. The article is on that page. Since I don’t know how to make a link, this is the only way I know how to get you there. Enjoy.
Please break your vow and let us know what NEMESIS has to say.
As a professional interviewer, what is your opinion of the interview of you? I thought it captured you.
<a target=”_blank” href=”http://www.baltimoresun.com/entertainment/booksmags/bal-to.lippman05apr05,0,3870438.story?coll=bal-features-headlines”><i>Baltimore Sun</i> profile</a>
What does “loose-limbed” mean, anyway?
Yes, a wonderful review.
Sure hope <i>nemesis</i> reads the NY Times Book section.
It’s bad enough that I started this book last night at work and got about a third through, and now I really want to peek at the end before I go to bed, and I’m trying to stop myself, but now I also have to refrain from clicking on the link with the possible spoiler! I don’t have that much self-control!
P.S. The book is quite compelling. Obviously.
I’m sure the profile is quite good — Tom is an excellent journalist, nice guy, etc. — but I won’t be able to read it for days. I had an early training session at this gym this a.m., where the staff largely knows me as the Woman Who Has No Fear of Appearing Totally Haggified, and as I left, someone at the front desk held it up and said, “Hey, it’s you!” I glanced at the photo, which I think is a marvel of lighting (thank you, Chiaki) and promptly fled the building.
Loose-limbed? Got me. I guess I am kind of gangly, especially given that I’m not especially thin. Or maybe it’s the yoga?
I’m not sure Maslin can power someone’s return to the top 15 — with each week, there will be more new/big titles — but she has a huge effect on Amazon and BN based on things people are e-mailing me.
Nicely-written review that makes some excellent points.
If possible, email the review to Nemesis. No words or intro, just the link.
I loved the femme fatale hair comment and the fact that you worked in a Beany Malone reference! Both the reviews were great. I have to admit that I can see Sandra Bullock playing either you or Tess, but Kate Hepburn would be good too!
Laura,
My hat’s off. Excellent and well-deserved review. Congratulations.
People put WTDK in a “Thrills and Chills…With Substance” box, saying “Satisfyingly developed characters enrich this crackling, first-rate mystery about a woman claiming to be one of two sisters who disappeared from a Maryland shopping mall 30 years earlier.”
Thank you, Kelly. I now have an excuse to buy the copy of People with Valerie Bertinelli on the cover.
I never need an excuse to buy People, because I am shallow. But don’t they tell you when they review your stuff or mention you?
I knew the People review was coming, but hadn’t heard what the content was. And I’m on a strict don’t ask/don’t tell (me unless they’re good) policy when it comes to reviews.
