Baltimore Food: An Update

As some of you know, I did devise a restaurant guide for Bouchercon. (Click on “My website” up above.) But — note the title of this blog — I forgot a few places.

The Brewer’s Art is a mile north of the hotel, according to Google. I don’t go there often because it makes me feel old, but it has outstanding beers. They also want you to know that they do not and have never made their fries in duck fat. Ever since they set the record straight on that, I have been longing for fries in duck fat.

Bicycle is in South Baltimore, too far too walk. I tend to overlook it because reservations are a must, and my household is a little weak on dinner plans that require reservations. I haven’t been in at least a year, but I know I always like the tuna tartare, and the lobster ravioli.

ETA: I don’t think I mentioned Tapas Teatro, either, but it occurs to me — it’s really accessible via Light Rail (from Howard Street to the Penn Station stop). And, because it’s one block north of the train station, it would be easy to find a taxi back. I was there tonight and our party sampled roasted eggplant, an arugula salad with heirloom tomatoes, albondigas and grilled shrimp. Tapas Teatro has its own organic farm, so the produce is unusually good.

Plus, I once saw Anne Tyler in Tapas Teatro, but decided not to bug her.

  1. “made their fries in duck fat”

Say THAT phrase 3 times fast!!

Someday I will visit Baltimore; but the beautiful mountains of western Maryland have my flat-land hoosier heart! (and if you go to Sharpsburg/Antietam Creek, you must go into the Blue Ridge mountains and eat at the South Mountain Inn…excellent steaks and seafood, and old pictures of Henry Kissinger and Zbig Bryzynski [et al] on the walls!)

  2. Laura,

Your B’Con food quide has been invaluable to me and I thank you again for all the effort you took putting it together for all of us who are coming to Baltimore next week.

I helped to plan a large dinner off-site for another author and a smaller dinner where I am meeting some internet friends from my writing group face to face for the first time. I couldn’t of done it without your advice and ideas.

So many crab cakes, so little time.

    Thanks.

  3. Kaye,

I read that the B’con set-up team went to Michelangelo’s pizza (so it must be near the hotel?) and they seemed to like it. I hope that helps.

  4. Iggie’s, which Laura has listed as “Walkable for Some” at .9 mile, has really good gourmet/thin-crust pizza. I doubt that I’ll walk it myself during the con, though.
